the story so far

Somewhere just outside the urban sprawl of a Florida city, this story begins a dark and not-so-stormy night when the last, not first violent incident caused me to flee with my children from our suburban home. We won't dwell there, the story involves jailing the abuser, getting a protective order, finding a new place to live and moving on with life while looking over my shoulder. Two years have passed, fortunately life has moved on--unlike many women who never make it out alive, never make it out intact - physically and/or emotionally, end up going back because they see no other choice if they want their kids to eat or who self-medicate with drugs or alcohol to escape a nightmare they could never have imagined back when the times were good. Life has settled into a routine of school for the kids and a new job for me. The saga that follows has been modified to protect the anonymity of my family and, more importantly, to show the reader this system failure is happening to many in need of financial support for their children. Do we dismiss the inadequacies of the child support system because we tell ourselves, well if she (or he) hadn't left none of this would happened in the first place? Yes, the child support system is overburdened and underfunded, but does that mean they simply don't have to do their job? Does that mean that children must go without? Let's explore together. It ain't right, I don't know what to do out it, but I've been trying'. . .
